Well, it’s certainly been a long time, hasn’t it? So much has happened since I last posted here.
One of those happenings is that I recently penned an article called “How to Combat AI’s Bias Problem” for Viacom News. It’s about demographic bias existing in certain artificial intelligence products, and what companies can do to improve their algorithms so that they work for all demographics at parity. There’s some auditing I did of a particular service where I found disparity in face detection for female faces of color.
I recently spoke more in depth on the topic at the Global Big Data Conference 2018 out in Santa Clara, CA. In my talk, I went into more detail on the specific audit techniques I employed to conclude that there was real bias in the face detection service I was testing out. I’m looking forward to spreading awareness on issues related to ethics in artificial intelligence at other venues in the coming months.
There’s a lot of work to be done in this space, and it deserves more attention.
